Description:

The National Certification Board (NCB) governs the NRPA professional and occupational certification programs in accordance with the mission and values of the Association:

  • CPRP - Certified Park and Recreation Professional
  • CPRE - Certified Park and Recreation Executive
  • AFO - Aquatic Facility Operator
  • CPSI - Certified Playground Safety Inspector

The NCB supports the achievement of the NRPA mission and is dedicated to enhancing and promoting the profession of parks and recreation by providing premier certifications in the industry.

Primary responsibilities of the NCB include:

  • Act as the national oversight body for the administration and supervision of national certification programs for recreation, park resources, leisure services, and other related park and recreation personnel.
  • Develop and ensure consistency of national standards for certification.
  • Oversee the ongoing analysis and research related to certification.
  • Create policy that will assure the initial competency of applicants and continued development of knowledge and skills by certified personnel.
  • Provide national recognition to certified personnel.


Qualifications:

  • Be knowledgeable about the process of certification - Public representatives are exempt from this qualification
  • (Preferred) Hold a professional or occupational certification in the field of parks, recreation and leisure services - Public and commercial representatives are exempt from this qualification
  • Students are eligible for a one-year term by applying to this separate volunteer opportunity


Commitment:

  • Attend an in-person meeting during the NRPA Annual Conference (virtual option is available)
  • Attend (typically three) other meetings (via Zoom) during the year to conduct business
  • Term is three years -- can be renewed

Service on the National Certification Board (NCB) each year can be submitted for 2 Professional Service Experience (PSE) points which is equivalent to 0.2 CEUs.

  • Upload a current resume
  • A written statement (200 words or less) describing your experience in attending, promoting or developing professional development for park and recreation professionals (e.g. serving on committees, speaking at conferences, etc.)
  • A written statement (200 words or less) describing your experience in advancing diversity, equity and inclusion for the field of parks and recreation

All committee applicants will be updated regarding their application status by August 31.
