The National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) establishes and maintains credentialing bodies that enhance the value of the Association for professionals and advocates. The NRPA Board of Directors has established the National Certification Board (NCB) to administer the NRPA professional and occupational certification programs in accordance with the goals and values of the Association.

The mission of the NCB supports the achievement of the NRPA mission and is dedicated to enhancing and promoting the profession of parks, recreation and leisure services by providing premier certifications in the industry.

Purpose of the NCB:
  • Act as the national oversight body for the administration and supervision of national certification programs for recreation, park resources, leisure services, and other related park and recreation personnel.
  • Develop and ensure consistency of national standards for certification.
  • Administer and facilitate delivery of a national certification program while using input and guidance from the reporting committees, future certification analysis committees and affiliates.
  • Oversee the ongoing analysis and research related to certification.
  • Create policy that will assure the initial competency of applicants and continued development of knowledge and skills by certified personnel.
  • Provide national recognition to certified personnel.`
  • Ensure the maintenance of appropriate records.
  • Promote certification requirements in job descriptions requiring recreation, park resources, and leisure service expertise.
  • Promote the benefits of certification and credentials as an essential element of professional career development.
Requirements:
  • All members should be knowledgeable about the process of certification, except for public and student representatives. All board members, except the advocate, student and commercial representative, must hold a professional or occupational certification in the field of parks, recreation and leisure services.
  • 3-year term (Conclusion Oct. 2023)
  • Typically meets 3 times per year for one hour teleconference call, however other meetings and teleconferences may be called as necessary.
  • Travel: Meets in-person at NRPA National Conference (Conference call option available)
