Description:

The purpose of the National Awards and Scholarship Committee is to facilitate the recognition of individuals and organizations whose activities have advanced the public’s appreciation and enjoyment of parks and recreation.  The committee also reviews and selects the Diversity Scholarship, Student Scholarship, and Young Professional Fellowship recipients. Opportunity is online with limited conference calls and one in person meeting, taking place at the annual conference.

Qualifications

  • NRPA Member in good standing
  • Ability to manage deadlines
  • Knowledge of a broad range of park and recreation professionals, services, and programs
  • Ability to critically analyze applications and set hierarchies
  • Interest in promoting NRPA awards and excellence in parks and recreation
  • Strong organizational skills 

Description of Duties

  • Committee meets in person at annual conference
  • Participate in all conference calls throughout the year when needed
  • Review all submitted programs (April – May)
  • Score submitted programs using provided judging criteria
  • Submit scores by e-mail within the required time period – (Middle of May)
  • Meet by conference call to confirm winners (End of May)
  • Awards are given at the annual conference in person (September – October) 

Commitment

  • Approximately 40 hours scoring applications within a 6-week period
  • Approximately 4 additional hours total for conference calls

Program Awards Committee term is one year (September – September)

  • No travel except for the in-person meeting for the annual conference is expected for committee business
